A celebration of Black history

60 years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, African Americans have made great strides and contributions to American society.

As the nation observes Black History Month, take part in events planned throughout February that celebrate the past and present contributions of African Americans. There’s something for everyone whether your preference is art, music, lively discussions or technology. Recognizing that the Black Family has its origins on the African continent while extending across the globe, this year’s theme is “Black Resistance,” which recognizes the effort to advocate for a dignified, self-determined life for Black citizens in the United States.

Take part in discussions, tours, live music and dance performances. 

• Heritage Fest takes place at the Adrienne Arsht Center on Feb. 4. Enjoy performances by The W’s featuring Johnny James Dr. J. and Live in Color! Sample delicious food from a variety of vendors and jam to beats pumping onto the dance floor by DJ Cardi
• Join the City of Homestead as they commemorate the vibrant past of the Black community on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Losner Park, with a Black History Celebration in the Park
• Enjoy an evening with Melton Mustafa during a three-day jazz festival Feb. 22-25 at The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater
• Miami Dade College invites you to a variety of events taking places across their campuses
