As just one of the many indigenous tribes who once called the Florida peninsula home, the Miccosukee have made significant social, political, and economic contributions to Miami-Dade County, encompassing their ancestral lands.
In honor and recognition of the strength and endurance of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners recently declared Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, Miccosukee Day. Moving forward, the second Monday of every October will be known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Miami-Dade County.
