Gridiron Showdown to be Hosted
by Commissioner Jordan

Miami, FL – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan will host the 2012 Jordan Bowl, which is a showdown between the Lake Stevens Cardinals and the
Opa-locka Panthers optimist clubs. The annual gridiron match, now in its sixth year,
will be held on Saturday, September 22, at 9:30 a.m., at Ingram Park, 2100 Burlington Street, in Opa-locka, Florida.

“Optimist clubs provide a safe haven for kids interested in sporting activities,” said Commissioner Jordan. “It is important to preserve programs such as these that promote teamwork and sportsmanship.”

For their efforts, each team will receive $500 to help underwrite costs for their football programs. A series of games will be held with teams ranging in age from five to 15 years old.

“With collegiate and professional football dominating the television airwaves, I am hoping that football fans will take a moment to attend this gridiron battle that will feature future hall-of-famers,” added Jordan. “While most of these boys will go on to play in high school, college and possibly professionally, they need the support of their communities while they are young. We need to demonstrate that we care about them on and off of the football field.”

The 2012 Jordan Bowl is sponsored by Sun Life Stadium and the Office of Commissioner Barbara Jordan.
