The City is hosting a series of free lectures on the second Wednesdays of the month at the Miramar Branch Library located at 2050 Civic Center Place. Avid gardeners and beginners will benefit from the essential concepts of urban farming and how to apply this knowledge to specific growing strategies and techniques in our South Florida climate.

MIAMI, FL – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime, District 2, today released Miami-Dade County’s official 2012 Haitian Heritage Cultural Month Event Calendar. The calendar lists the various events being held in Miami-Dade County in the month of May to celebrate Haitian Heritage Cultural Month. The theme for the month is “Rediscovering the Pearl of the Caribbean: Celebrating an Explosion of Culture.”

PORT OF MIAMI TO WELCOME
VOLVO OCEAN RACE COMPETITOR

(MIAMI, May, 2011)--The 70-foot Open Yacht PUMA Mar Mostro will dock at the Port of Miami to allow VIPs a sneak peek inside one of the contenders in the upcoming 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race, a 31,250 nautical-mile competition that will span the globe.

The PUMA Mar Mostro is the only American-made vessel competing that has an American skipper at the helm. The ship and crew will be conducting test-runs in open water to familiarize themselves with the South Florida coast for the competition.

The Volvo Ocean Race is an extreme professional sailing event that tests the ability and emotional dedication of a select few from around the world. The 2011-2012 edition of the race will kick-off this October in Alicante, Spain.

In anticipation of the arrival of the boats as they sail from Itajai, Brazil, to Miami on Leg 6 of the race, the Miami stopover team has started to shape the 14-day festival - Volvo Ocean Race Miami ‘Beyond Water’.

SCHOOL FOR ADVANCED STUDIES TO
 HOLD EARLY COLLEGE ORIENTATION
 

The School for Advanced Studies (SAS) will be holding Early College Orientation for current 8th- and 9th-grade students on Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at the North Campus of Miami Dade College (MDC).  The event will take place at the campus’ Lehman Theater, 11380 N.W. 27th Ave., Miami. 

Information regarding SAS and MDC will be disseminated at this event and a tour of the facilities, including the state-of-the-art Science Complex at MDC-North will follow the formal presentation. 

SAS is a full time dual-enrollment high school, a combined effort of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and MDC. Students attending SAS complete their last two years of high school while attending MDC. 

 The opportunity for acceleration and enrichment attracts motivated and academically talented students. SAS takes pride in its family-like environment, small school setting, and focus on a quality education.
