Commissioner Jordan Helps Seniors Prepare for  Hurricane Season

Miami, FL -  More than 40 senior citizens living in Miami Gardens recently got a prep course in hurricane preparedness. The workshop, sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan, was held at the Robert Sharp Towers for seniors.

Loubert Alexis, a coordinator in the Office of Emergency Management, helped conduct the hour-long workshop. He focused on the needs of seniors before, during and after a hurricane. He also discussed in-place sheltering, pets, and the registration process for Special Needs Shelters.

Each senior citizen walked away with a hurricane readiness kit. It included a hurricane guide, water pouch, gloves, bandages, bookmarks with tips, a key chain, and pen.

“Our seniors can be vulnerable during a crisis,” said Commissioner Jordan. “This workshop will hopefully alleviate any potential problems and allow them to adequately prepare for their safety.”

During a crisis, residents can call the Rumor Control Hotline, which is 3-1-1. However, seniors who are electricity-dependent should register with the Office of Emergency Management before a crisis arises at (305) 468-5400, TTY/TDD (305) 468-5402.
