LOCAL COMMUNITY EVENT

VMBS...Giving At-risk Students A Musical Chance    

Suzette Rochester, Manager, Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) - Florida Representative Office (2nd R; 2nd Row) encourages and educates 60 at-risk students at the Lauderdale Lakes Educational Complex's Smart School Charter Middle and Eagle Charter Academy during a motivational talk held recently at the Complex. Under the tutelage of re-knowned musical legend of third-world band, Willie Stewart, 60 at-risk students have begun learning the history and musical significance of percussion instruments from around the world and will participate in a world-class musical odyssey, themed: Rhythms of Africa on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at the Parker Play House in Ft. Lauderdale. The Rhythms of Africa Musical Odyssey featuring these at-risk students is one of the many ways in which Victoria Mutual continues to impact the youth and community development in South Florida.

Girls Summit – For the Future of Girls

Live Healthy / Lead Healthy

September 1, 2011 – Miami, Fla. – The Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc. will host a Girl Summit for The Future of Girls on October 15, 2011 from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami, FL 33132. The Girl Summit will feature Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, Dr. Donna Shalala, President of the University of Miami, and other prominent speakers and panelists who are focused on the message – Live Healthy / Lead Healthy. Nine in ten girls say the fashion industry and/or the media place a lot of pressure on teenage girls to be thin. The roles that girls are being prepared to accept in every walk of life have a deliberate focus on girls as leaders.  The Summit will deal with this focus and on the evolving media images of girls.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY OPENS
 311 SERVICE CENTERS

 (MIAMI, September 29, 2011) – On October 3, 2011, Miami-Dade County is unveiling 311 Service Centers at three locations that will provide residents with a convenient way to continue to access County services and information at nearby locations.  Centers will operate weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. closing one hour at lunchtime.  A staff member from the Department of Community Information & Outreach’s 311 Answer Center will be on hand to assist residents with general information, referrals and the purchase of items such as baby stroller permits, dog tags, transit passes and more.  Residents will have self-service options including a touch screen kiosk for making payments to the County, schedule service or search public records and maps, as well as a phone that connects directly to the 311 Answer Center.  The South Dade location will have a full service transit vending machine that accepts all forms of payment.  

The 311 Service Centers came about as a result of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Lynda Bell’s request to provide the residents of South Miami-Dade better access to County services.  Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez added two more centers in an effort to reach residents throughout the County.

 

A Matter of Balance
Increase Activity, Increase Flexibility and Increase Strength! 

MIAMI GARDENS, FL. –October 21, 2011--The City of Miami Gardens has partnered with Independent Living Community Services to provide a series of healthy aging initiatives. One of the healthy aging initiatives is the Matter of Balance workshop (MOB). The Matter of Balance workshop will take place at Miami Carol City Park Recreation Center (18500 NW 32nd avenue) starting October 27, 2011 from 10am – 12pm. This is an 8 week class once per week every Thursday. The Matter of Balance workshop provides participants (older adults) that have experienced falls or a decrease in activity with strategies to improve overall balance and tips to reduce fall risks at home.

(Oct. 6, 2011) – As first announced on Sept. 13, Calder Casino & Race Course is proud to be the venue of choice for Islands United/Absolute Adventure’s events “Girl Power” on Thursday, October 6 and “R.A.V.E” (Real Artist Vibe Experience) on Saturday, October 8.  The events will entertain thousands of concert and party-goers coming to the City of Miami Gardens to celebrate the music and culture of the islands.

SMALL CLAIMS COURT MAY BE YOUR TICKET TO RIGHTING A CIVIL INJUSTICE 

(MIAMI, October 12, 2011) The Miami-Dade County Business Affairs and Consumer Protection will host a FREE Small Claims Court Clinic on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in the auditorium of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue headquarters in Doral, Florida.  Attendees will receive hands-on help for filing their cases in Small Claims Court. 

The Small Claims Court process will be led by Miami-Dade Consumer Advocate, Leonard Elias, who will explain the County’s Small Claims Court system. In addition, Elias will provide a detailed explanation of how the Small Claims Court works and will answer questions from participants. 

The Small Claims Court process is used by individuals to address disputes involving $5,000 or less, without the costly assistance of an attorney.   

Visit the Miami-Dade County's Business Affairs and Consumer Protection website, formerly Consumer Services Department for instructions in English and Spanish on how to file in Small Claims Court as well as collect on a judgment.  Legal forms are available for download from the website free of charge, or at the clinic for $5.00.

Creole-language Home Buyers Workshop

MIAMI, Fl – Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle is inviting residents to participate in a special Creole-language Home Buyers Workshop on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the McDonald Center in North Miami Beach, 17051 NE 19th Avenue, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The free workshop is ideal for residents who are first-time homebuyers, or would like a better understanding of how to purchase a home. Commissioner Rolle, the Miami-Dade Affordable Housing Foundation, Inc., and the Housing Finance Authority of Miami-Dade County will be hosting the event.  

The workshop will feature numerous guest speakers, including realtors, creditors, and more who will explain each step of the home buying process. “It’s a buyer’s market nowadays since real estate in Miami-Dade has become more affordable than ever,” said Commissioner Rolle. “However, an informed buyer is an empowered buyer, and one that will be prepared on what to look for and how to budget.”

MIAMI, Fl – Vice-Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz announces a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the completion of NW 74th Street from NW 84th Avenue to 107th Avenue. The ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 18, 2010 at NW 107th Avenue and NW 74th Street, Doral, Florida.

“I am very pleased Miami-Dade County and Doral residents will be able to access this street that has convenient and direct access from NW 74th Street Turnpike interchange to the Palmetto Expressway,” said Vice-Chairman Diaz. “For many years NW 74th Street has been opened but there was no point of entry after NW 84th Avenue and residents had to drive south to NW 58th Street or north to 106th Street in order to make it to NW 107th Avenue. This completion will provide commuters with another traveling option in the morning and afternoon when traffic is heaviest.”

MIAMI-DADE TRANSIT CELEBRATES
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH FREE TOURS
 

(MIAMI, October, 2010) – For the 10th consecutive year, Miami-Dade Transit will celebrate Hispanic Heritage month with its award-winning Hispanic Heritage Tours, showcasing Miami’s rich Hispanic legacy.  

The free, narrated three-hour tours are offered in comfortable MDT buses that visit such sites as the Miami Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity and Miami’s historic Little Havana.  

The tours will take place on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Tours will depart from downtown Miami’s Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 N.W. First St., at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. To reserve a seat, call 786-469-5415. Tour participants can request the tour be narrated in English or Spanish.

As you already know, Miami Dade County Commissioners voted to restore The Department of Cultural Affairs Grants Budget on Friday Morning @ 3:20 a.m.    Throughout the meeting on Thursday evening, the commission was bombarded by artists, arts leaders, parents and children appealing to the commission to save arts and culture in Miami Dade, asking them to restore funding to the Department of Cultural Affairs.
