Chairman Joe A. Martinez Announces that Miami International Airport is Back to A Full Flight Schedule

MIAMI, Fl – Seven days after a massive fire destroyed the entire system of pumps used to fuel aircraft at Miami International Airport, Chairman Joe A. Martinez is pleased to announce that on March 31 the airport returned to a full flight schedule with no delays or cancellations expected because of the damage.

A new system of temporary fuel pumps was successfully installed and activated on March 31 by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, with the assistance of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and numerous contractors who have been working around the clock since the March 23 incident. The temporary pump system has the capacity to fuel MIA’s 800-plus flights per day until a permanent system is designed and installed. After hundreds of canceled and delayed flights in the first few days after the fire, there were no cancellations and only 11 flights delayed because of fueling limitations on March 30.

“Our Aviation staff, along with the airlines, have been working non-stop to address the situation and minimize the inconvenience our travelers have had to experience,” said Chairman Martinez.  “I thank  all the hard-working individuals involved in overcoming this unforeseen event.”
