On January 26th, 2012, the City of Miami Gardens will host
the City of Miami Gardens 2012 Citizen’s Academy in the City
Council Chambers, 1515 NW 167th Street. The 10-week
educational program consists of interactive presentations by
the various City departments and culminates into increased
citizen awareness and involvement on boards, committees, and
other community-wide initiatives. The graduates of the first
class receive recognition for their time and participation
on this new venture with a ceremony and reception.

ANIMAL SERVICES OFFERING DISTEMPER TESTING FOR DOGS
(MIAMI, January 8, 2012)
– Animal Services will be offering distemper testing for dogs adopted
from the shelter between December 24, 2011 and January 6, 2012. Any
dogs adopted during this time period that are currently ill will be
tested free of charge. Testing will take place at the shelter from
Monday, January 9th through Saturday, January 14th
from 10:00am to 3:00pm. There is no appointment required.

The CITY OF MIAMI CELEBRATES NEW YEAR’S EVE
WITH THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Official BIG ORANGE Launch!
(Miami, FL December 30, 2011 from
4:00pm – 7:00pm)—
Join Mayor Tomas Regalado at the Downtown
Development Authority (DDA), One Miami Stage in front of the Hotel
Intercontinental to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Big Orange,
the official New Year’s Eve Time Ball of the World. The free
family-friendly fanfare will include a tropical carnival parade, live
entertainment, Pitbull’s Productions
New Artist Madai, and the Mayor’s Official Launch of the Big Orange
with a ceremony beginning at 5:45pm and launch at 6:00 pm.
The City of Miami’s green icon, the Big Orange (produced and hosted by
the Greater Miami Host Committee in partnership with the Hotel
InterContinental Miami,) will have a new animated face unveiled at
6:00pm.
The Big Orange annually attracts an audience of some 150,000 -250,000
local participants and international visitors, as well as an annual
worldwide television viewership of over 100 million.

Ring in the New Year at Calder Casino & Race Course
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Dec. 23, 2011)
– South Floridians have many choices on where to ring in the New Year on
Dec. 31 and Calder Casino & Race Course will be a popular spot as it
offers a fun-filled evening with drawings for $20,000 in slot Free Play,

Calder’s month-long Sleigh of Free Play promotion comes to its exciting

CIVIL AIR PATROL OPA LOCKA CADET SQUADRON TO RECEIVE OFFICIAL CHARTER AT FLORIDA
MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY CEREMONY
Miami, FL [December 20, 2011] –
At a time when school districts are cutting extra-curricular
programs, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and Florida Memorial
University (FMU) have partnered to launch a new unit, the
Opa Locka Cadet Squadron to service youth living in
neighborhoods in and around the City of Miami Gardens.
On Saturday, January 21, 2012,
commencing at 2:00 pm, the unit will host a ceremony during
which the official charter document will be presented by the
Vice Commander of CAP Florida Wing/CAP, Lt. Col. Phillip
Zedonek, and FMU President, Dr. Henry Lewis, will be invited
to accept an award recognizing the university’s contribution
to the success of the program.

Anniversary of the Independence of Haiti
MIAMI, Fl
– Residents of Miami-Dade County are invited to join Miami-Dade County
District 2 Commissioner Jean Monestime at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January
24, 2012, at the Stephen P. Clark Center to commemorate the 208th
anniversary of the independence of Haiti. Commissioner Jean Monestime
will also take this opportunity to recognize leaders from various
sectors in the community.
"Two hundred and eight years ago, our forefathers rebelled against their
colonial masters to form the first independent black republic in the
western hemisphere," said Commissioner Monestime. "Today we remember
Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Toussaint L’Ouverture, Alexandre Pétion,
Henri Christophe, Capois La Mort and all the other heroes who broke the
chains of slavery. We also use this occasion to recognize a few
community leaders who are carrying the torch of freedom while paving the
way for future generations”.
